Vestibular Disease and Mozzie’s Journey
Back in April 2023, I shared an article about a dog’s experience with vestibular disease. Read it here: https://www.pawsibilities.co.uk/have-you-heard-of-vestibular-syndrome/
Since then, my own dog Mozzie has experienced two vestibular episodes, from which he has thankfully recovered well.
Mozzie’s first episode occurred while I was away training. Luckily, my husband had read the article and recognized the symptoms immediately when Mozzie started to become unstable during a short walk.
Six months later, during his second episode, we managed to capture a short video of one typical symptom of vestibular disease: Nystagmus, which is an uncontrollable repetitive eye movement.
After both episodes immediately started working Mozzie on a program of exercises targeted at stimulating his balance and coordination to help his recovery and minimise the chances of long lasting after effects.
Most dogs, like Mozzie, can make a good recovery from vestibular disease, though some may have lasting effects like a slight head tilt.
If your dog suffers from a vestibular episode, ask your vet to refer them to me for physiotherapy as soon as possible. The earlier we start, the faster we can get your dog back on its feet and enjoying life to the full.
